Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
